Forklift Certification Requirements

How Often Does Forklift Certification Need to Be Renewed?

OSHA requires each operator’s performance to be evaluated at least once every three years, under 29 CFR 1910.178(l). Refresher training is also needed after an accident, a near miss, unsafe driving, or a change in truck type or workplace. The employer certifies the training; there is no government license.

What Training Must Include

That last step is why an online-only "forklift license" is not enough. The trainer needs the knowledge, training and experience to do the job, and may be your own employee.

The employer certifies each operator with the name, training date, evaluation date and the trainer’s name. Operators generally have to be at least 18 under federal child labor rules for most non-farm work.

Getting It Done

Ask training providers about training on your own truck and on site.
